Happy Cinco de Mayo – Van Gogh Oranje Mexi-Tini Recipe

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

It’s the beginning of May and the thing I love most about this month, besides showing my mom how much I love her, is celebrating Cinco de Mayo!!!  It’s quite the celebración here in LA!

By the way, did you know Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence day?

Cinco de Mayo (May 5th), was the day 5000 Mexican soldiers fought a French and loyalist Mexican army of 8000 in the Battle of Puebla outside of Mexico city. Who knew?!  Just a little bit of trivia you can pass along to sound super smart when you’re out celebrating with friends tonight. ;-)

If you are planning a little pre-party at home before you hit the town, try my yummy spin on the Van Gogh Oranje Mexi-tini which was featured in our S’more Good News eNewsletter.  This tasty little drink is sure to get you ready for a Mexican fiesta!!

Simone’s Star Struck Night at the L.A. Antiques Show

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

New fans of GHS

Last week my BFF Alycia and I attended the super chic Los Angeles Antiques Show hosted by none other than one of my favorite non-profit groups P.S. Arts. The event was organized by The Antique Dealers Association of California and managed by Dolphin promotions. All of the totally to-die-for hors d’oeuvre were provided by our friends at Serves You Right Catering. Carmen and the GHS team were beyond excited to provide desserts  for the occasion!

The night was amazing and we were absolutely star struck when we saw Courtney Cox and Ian Gomez from Cougar Town.  There were extravagant exhibits and all of the high profile designers were in attendance like Tommy Chambers, Tommy Chambers Interiors, Thomas Lavin of Thomas Lavin Showrooms.

Everyone was having a great time but the night really took off when–you guessed it–the S’muffins made an appearance.  The guests started going bananas!!  Groups of people would stop in their tracks and say “OMG, what is this?  It’s the best thing I’ve ever tasted!!”  Good thing we were there to educate everyone on the hottest new L.A. dessert, S’muffins!!! Needless to say GHS acquired a ton of new fans that night.

Beautiful presentaion thanks to Serves You Right Catering

If you’re not familiar with P.S Arts, please let me share a little bit about the organization. It is very near and dear to my heart.  P.S Arts improves children’s lives through art education. They recruit, hire, underwrite and train professional artists to develop curriculum and teach classes during the regular school day. The organization also works to educate and empower classroom teachers through arts-related workshops that demonstrate how to integrate creative expression and the arts into core academic subjects.  All of P.S. ARTS’ instruction models are built upon the California Department of Education’s Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Standards and draw heavily upon the organization’s 19 years experience.  The goals of P.S. ARTS’ programs are to engage young minds, develop creative skills, improve observational powers, increase receptivity and develop problem solving abilities, all skills that serve children in their academic and personal development.  For more information on upcoming events or how you can get involved go to their website at http://www.psarts.org

They even offer complete motion picture production services through their affiliate, Raleigh Film.  Once you check out their slide show portfolio you’ll see why the big wigs leave it up to Raleigh Studios to create events that leave guests saying, ”Now that was an affair to remember!”

BTW, Happy St. Patty’s Day!  If you didn’t wear green, the least you can do is grab a green S’muffin!

Quickie St. Patty’s Day Beer Tip: How to make green beer

3-6 drops green food coloring

12-16 oz. light beer of ale

Pour beer into the glass or pint.  Add green food coloring.  Stir slowly till the color is evenly distributed through the beer, just make sure you don’t create extra foam when you stir.

Customized S'muffins for Sugar Inc. corporate event

Everyone just can’t get enough of GHS!  Recently we’ve been featured in Inside the Kaganoff Kitchen, Karen Salkin’s It’s not about me (But it really is) and Romy Raves!   If you haven’t tried S’muffins yet, you’re totally missing out–as you can see, you don’t have to just take our word for it!  Are you just looking for the right excuse–as if their yumminess isn’t reason enough? Well, picking them up from Platine’s to share with your clients or coworkers is a great one!   Bribing clients and coworkers with sweets is always a positive!   It has a zero percent failure rate, guaranteed!

Did you know Smuffin’s are also perfect for corporate parties?   I recently attended a wonderful corporate party with Interclick at an LA Kings suite.  Everyone had a blast.   Of course, S’muffins and I were the icing on the cake.  Desserts are an essential piece of any event, and remember to fit them into your theme.   Carmen can make S’muffin customized for any corporate party theme. Just ask our friends at Sugar Inc., who just raved about their customized S’muffins!

Which leads us to this week’s tip: what is great go-to dish for corporate potlucks, corporate sports events and parties in general–besides S’muffins, of course?  Pico de Gallo!  Check out this great simple pico de gallo recipe (inspired our good friend, Rachel Kaganoff Stern’s salsa recipe)

1 cup finely chopped sweet tomatoes (make sure they are ripe but not mushy)

½ of a sweet onion, finely diced

juice of ½ a lime

1 clove garlic, finely diced

2 tablespoons cilantro, finely diced

½ teaspoon salt

Toss it all together in a bowl and let it set for at least 2 hours so all the flavors mix well (it is even better if you make it the night before), and serve with your favorite tortilla chips!

Well, I’m off to get my final 2009 grove on!  Don’t forget to send us pictures of your 2009 celebrations with GHS and drop us a comment below with how you are ringing in the New Year.  Thanks.  Catch all you lovelies in 2010!
